Municipality of North Grenville - Year In Review 2010

Tuesday February 01, 2011

By Forbes Symon, Director of Planning & Development

North Grenville experienced unprecedented growth in 2010 and continues to be one of the fastest growing municipalities in Eastern Ontario.  The total value of construction in 2010 was a staggering $63,658,850, up 46% from the 2009 level of $43,631,603 and up 179% from the 10 year average!

This huge increase can be attributed to numerous factors.  The first is the fact that permits were issued for an unprecedented 175 residential dwelling units in 2010. The previous high for residential units was 103 units issued in 2007.

There was also a significant increase in commercial construction in Kemptville in 2010, with construction beginning at the Kemptville Colonnade.  Permits were issued for Staples, Walmart, a new Canadian Tire (which includes a Mark Work Warehouse), Tim Horton’s, Royal LePage and Scotiabank in 2010.

2011 will see additional commercial activity at the Kemptville Colonnade, with TD Bank, A & W and Dollarama already approved for construction.

The most significant development activity in 2010 however was in the institutional category.  2010 saw the opening of a multi-million dollar expansion of the Kemptville and District Hospital, as well as construction starting at the new North Grenville District High School, a multi-million dollar expansion of St. Mike Catholic High School and a new central North Grenville Library strategically located within beautiful Old Town Kemptville.

The downtown also saw numerous commercial ventures start up in 2010, with continued growth expected for 2011. The Business Improvement Area has a variety of projects slated for 2011 to retain and attract more businesses to the downtown core.
