Agricultural TechnologyEastern Ontario is an agricultural centre of production and innovation – and North Grenville is at the heart of eastern Ontario. According to Statistics Canada census data, Eastern Ontario represented 28% of Ontario’s dairy farms and 26% of hay and other fodder crop farms in 2001. The North Grenville area itself experiences the highest farm gate sales on a per acre basis, at $315.
Existing industries within the agricultural sector include Eastern Breeders Inc. (EBI), representing one of North Grenville’s most profitable operations with annual sales upwards of $5 million. EBI and its three partner organizations across Canada own The Semex Alliance (TSA), a renowned leader in developing and marketing elite dairy and beef genetics around the world. Combined, the organizations market over 7 million doses of bovine semen worth more than $70M annually domestically and internationally.
The Ferguson Forest Centre (FFC) also represents a significant and long-standing green component of North Grenville. The FFC produces 2.5 million tree seedlings per year and serves much of eastern Ontario’s landscaping and reforestation demands. Recently, Ferguson Forest Centre has partnered with the State University of New York to research growth rates of various species of trees for biomass production.
The University of Guelph’s Kemptville Campus consisting of 800 acres of farming and equine land further reinforces the importance of the agricultural industry in North Grenville.
